Empowering Communities: Updates from ONMI's Field Work in South Sudan

After returning from South Sudan three weeks ago, I have closely monitored ONMI's work on the ground with field staff. Last week, there was a pastoral training workshop on Church authority and discipline and a progress report on food security in Beth Israel Farmland and Beth Messiah Farmland with Pastor John Thon Makur.

Spiritual Leadership: Guiding with Humility and Service

Spiritual growth: To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

Thanks to the invaluable support, the community in Rumbek, Lakes State, has achieved self-sustainability. Pastors John and Gabriel, with their families and congregation, worked hard to cultivate farmland, yielding over 1000 kg of maize, a crucial staple crop and a beacon of hope for the community.

The Transformative Impact of Assistance on ONMIs: Empowering Communities Towards Self-Sufficiency

The contrast between the 3 kg monthly rations provided by UNHCR in refugee camps and the locally grown maize highlights the transformative impact of assistance to ONMIs in empowering communities to achieve self-sufficiency and independence.

The success story in Rumbek showcases the community's resilience and determination to create a sustainable future with your vital support.

Empowering Communities Through Food Security Initiatives

ONMI aims to establish food security for individuals returning from exile, rebuilding communities devastated by war and displacement. This vision provides immediate relief and empowers individuals for long-term self-sufficiency, addressing a fundamental need for their well-being and stability.

Scalability and Replicability of ONMI's Initiatives in South Sudan

The initiative's work in Eastern Equatoria State and its expansion to Lake State demonstrates the scalability and replicability of its approach. By successfully implementing its programs in different regions, ONMI showcases that its model can be adapted and applied effectively in various contexts throughout South Sudan. This not only highlights the organization's impact but also its potential to create lasting change on a broader scale.

Record Harvest at Beth Israel Farmland: Two Tons of Corn in Eastern Equatoria State

At the Beth Israel farmland in Eastern Equatoria State, a significant milestone has been achieved with the recent harvest of two tons of Corn, equivalent to 4000 lb. or 1818 KG, which translates to 18 bags of 100kg each during the second season of cultivation in 2024. This bountiful harvest not only signifies the hard work and dedication of the agricultural department but also showcases the fertile land and favorable conditions for crop cultivation in the region.

Looking ahead, there are still two phases of corn harvest yet to come at this thriving farmland, promising even more abundance and success in the upcoming seasons. The ONMI's agricultural department is strategically planning to utilize this surplus corn harvest to supply essential corn flour to institutions like the Polytechnic Institute, Bethlehem Nursery, and Primary Academy, thereby contributing to the local community's food security and sustenance.

Creating a Sustainable Economy through Corn Flour Provision

It is important to note that the provision of corn flour to these institutions will not be a charitable donation. Instead, a sustainable and mutually beneficial approach is being adopted. A revolving economy budget is being established, wherein both schools will purchase corn flour from the agricultural department at fair market prices. The generated funds will then be reinvested to manage the farm's operations efficiently, compensate the dedicated staff, procure necessary resources such as fuel, undertake maintenance and repairs, and ensure the farmland remains in optimal condition for continued productivity and growth.

Empowering Underprivileged Youth Through Educational Scholarships

In order to acquire the necessary corn flour, the organization ONMI is faced with the task of raising a substantial amount of funds. Specifically, they need to secure a total of $5,500 to provide scholarships for 12 students hailing from disadvantaged backgrounds at NPI. These individuals, coming from impoverished families, are in need of financial assistance to pursue their education and improve their prospects for the future. Additionally, ONMI is also aiming to gather a separate scholarship fund amounting to $7,000 to support 41 impoverished students from BNPA. This initiative underscores the organization's commitment to empowering underprivileged youth by offering them access to educational opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.

Empowering South Sudanese Students Through Innovative Training Program at Nehemiah Polytechnic Institute

We plan to implement a one-year vigorous Booth Camp training program at Nehemiah Polytechnic Institute for our students to specialize in product development, data science, automation, and app building. This initiative aims to empower South Sudanese students to create innovative solutions that can be utilized across America.

Strategic Financial Planning for a Mission Trip to South Sudan

Before embarking on my last three-week mission trip to South Sudan, scheduled for August 2024, meticulous planning was undertaken to ensure the success of the journey. The financial aspect of the expedition was a critical component that required careful consideration. A comprehensive financial plan was meticulously crafted, outlining a budget of $80,000 to cover all expenses associated with the mission trip.

Overcoming Fundraising Challenges in Summer: Closing the Gap on a $22,000 Deficit

Despite the detailed planning and efforts to secure funding, the reality of fundraising in Summer proved to be challenging. While the initial target was set at $80,000, the total amount raised fell short at $52,000. This shortfall of $28,000 presented a significant obstacle in the execution of the mission trip as planned. The remaining amount is essential to meet the financial obligations and requirements of the mission, particularly in the context of the annual mission fiscal budget that will end on Sept 30th 2024. We need to raise the remaining balance in the next few weeks to catch up on our deficit.

The Critical Need to Close the Funding Gap for Mission Success

As the mission fiscal year date draws near, the urgency of closing this funding gap becomes increasingly apparent. The mission's success and ability to fulfill the intended objectives hinge on securing the necessary financial support. Every dollar contributed plays a crucial role in enabling the mission to proceed smoothly and effectively, ensuring that the impact on the communities in South Sudan is maximized.
